Making Active: Design Solutions for the Sedentary Workday
We are bombarded with specific information about how to use exercise to manage weight and improve health. Yet many Americans are heavier and unhealthier than ever before. If you know you will sit at a desk and stare at a computer for eight hours, why donʼt you take advantage of every opportunity to burn calories? Media, society, and corporations make it confusing to understand what it takes to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Collage 1: She’ll Like You Better
Are we exercising for our health or is the media making us insecure?
Collage 2: Perpetual Hunger
On one hand, we have media selling us health through the lens of sexuality. On the other, we are told that fast food is trendy and cool.
Collage 3: Conspicuous Consumption
Obsession, the other end of the spectrum.
Collage 4: Pills, Pills, and More Pills
Diet pills, aka legal speed or over-the-counter crack, can lead to addiction just like illegal narcotics.
This collage series provided the narrative to my thesis project during my time at the California College of the Arts.
